Motivation of the Candidate
I have worked as an Executive Committee member since 2014, serving as Vice President from 2017 and as President from 2021. I am deeply committed to the aims and ambitions of ASSITEJ and the dedication and passion of its membership. I want to continue to be involved because I see that the work we do as a global network has impact, creates change and enables inclusion of artists and audiences everywhere: the importance of unity and of cultural inclusion is greater than it ever was. I am continually fascinated and awed by the artistic practice our global network shares, by the way members support and care for each other, by the courage shown by so many, by the multiple contextual challenges we face. ASSITEJ Executive committee is a board of great imagination and broad collective experience who together serve the goals of the Association and it has been my privilege to lead in these times of enormous change.

Profile of the Candidate
For the President position, it is important to have a practical and procedural view of the work including knowledge of the constitution and how this relates to the desired action and objectives of the network. As well as this the President must see the big picture; looking to the future and being aware of the needs of the members; seeing opportunities and connections; seek ways to have ASSITEJ International at the centre of cultural dialogue anywhere in the world; raising the value and recognition of artists and audiences in theatre and performance for children and young people everywhere. I hope I bring a sense of collaboration to the Executive Committee, in the spirit of working with everyone’s strengths and openness to the wisdom that each person brings. I know my own learning curve is constant, my curiosity is endless and I have reliance on my colleagues, knowing the commitment that people bring to this position of responsibility and trust.

Candidate for the Position of Secretary General

Louis Valente Sørensen – ASSITEJ Denmark

Louis Valente Sørensen is the current Secretary General of ASSITEJ (elected at ASSITEJ World Congress in 2017 and again in 2021). He has been working in the office of ASSITEJ Denmark as staff member and later as the Executive Director from 2013 until 2023. The educational background consists of a master’s degree in philosophy and cultural encounters. He is raised in the world of TYA and has been involved as actor, translator and tour manager before entering ASSITEJ. Louis is married to a Cuban actress with whom he has two children. He speaks, reads and writes – besides his Danish mother tongue – Spanish and English.

Motivation of the Candidate
ASSITEJ International is undergoing big changes with the increase in staff members, level activities, and influence on political levels. My main motivation is to lead the Association safely through the challenges this transition includes, and to really get the most out of the momentum and the possibilities it gives us. To make sure that the culture and “spirit” of ASSITEJ as a movement of grassroots and cultural activist takes the “front seat” and is multiplied, diversified, and nurtured by a professionalised secretariat. An important ambition is also that an increased part of the international activities of ASSITEJ are designed in a way so that they help the National Centres to be stronger and more efficient in their national context because most of the funding for TYA and the political framework for children’s access to culture is created nationally. Another ambition is to use the political influence ASSITEJ is now achieving in the EU to initiate the same in other regions of the world. At the congress in Cuba, we are seeing political synergies among the Iberoamerican countries, but we are still to expand this to African, North American, Asian and Pacific regions.

Profile of the Candidate
The workload and pace of ASSITEJ is high and demanding and has given me administrative skills, and a profound knowledge about the membership, that I will bring into the next three years. Since 2021 I have also gained significant knowledge about applying for and administering funds from the European Union (Creative Europe), and on how to engage in policy development in the EU. I strive to be diplomatic and to bind the very different persons, national and regional contexts and organizational structures that are in ASSITEJ together. In communication with members and in the realization of ASSITEJ activities I seek to listen and finds ways where the cooperation can be most productive always respecting the central elements in our constitution and philosophy.

My two years in the Italian Capital of Culture revealed how communication in complex systems can be reinforced and empowered. The significant work accomplished in Italian Capital of culture allows me to dedicate my full attention to AI. Another challenge I’m eager to tackle is the issue of language diversity within Assitej. I believe more efforts should be made to include and bridge language and mobility gaps. I believe there’s a need to connect and enhance the best practices within the Association, requiring both method and time. I’m committed to engage with those who may seem unreachable, be they artists or children. t’s increasingly crucial to foster cooperation among our countries and capitalize on the momentum society is recognizing, advocating for the importance of art in children’s development and sustaining belief in peace.

Having previously worked in the Executive Committee during the challenging times of COVID and having experience in managing a complex project such as European networks and cooperation large scale processes, enhances my effectiveness across multiple levels.Being Italian and not having complete mastery of the English language, gives me insight into the importance of reaching those who struggle by setting specific protocols. I have been a member of the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ International since 2021, International Representative of ASSITEJ UK and was Chair of IIAN (2018-2022). When I talk about ASSITEJ, it’s so big, many find it easiest to ask, ‘but why do you do it?’, and the answer is easy: ‘Why wouldn’t you want to be an active part of creating a world that is better for children than the one we arrived in? To understand the brilliance of difference, and grow & learn from global collaboration? And to serve something bigger than yourself?’ During my time on the EC, I have conceptualised work which begins to more deeply integrate access and inclusion into our organisation at the core (eg. trialling various models of the Access Committee). But, the work is not one model fits all. I am committed to driving this work forward, building on it. I am ready to not just fly, but soar. I believe in the globalness of ASSITEJ; ensuring rich, sustainable access acknowledging culture, economy, technology and disability. As EC champion for access, my aim is to ensure both, in collaboration with sustainability remain front and centre, at the proud heart of ASSITEJ’s growth and development.

As chair of the SustainabilityCommittee I am thrilled ASSITEJ was granted the first EcoCertificat for Cultural Networks in the EU. I am striving to take this work forward making our learnings in this area useful for our community. I look forward to more learning by sharing our tools and challenges. Sustainability is linked to privileges and global inequality. Taking into account that ecological transformation can only be achieved through social justice I want to look deeper into the cross-cutting possibilites between sustainable actions and our work in access, inclusion&fair collaboration.

I believe in the importance of our global community of TYA practitioners dedicated to the same vision: to make every child’s right to experience art and culture become a reality. Motivation of the Candidate
In 2025, ASSITEJ International will celebrate 60 years of existence, three generations of artists and cultural leaders put their talents together to develop and strengthen arts for young audience across the globe. I want to be part of the next generation of ASSITEJ leaders who will pursue the mission of the elders, build on their work, take innovative and bold turns and decisions to ensure every child’s rights to participate in culture life is fulfilled. In collaboration with experienced colleagues from all over the world, I’ll tirelessly work to ensure that the voices of the most vulnerable people are heard and that political, climate and economic injustices are creatively, constructively and critically addressed within the network, for and with both TYA practitioners/experts and the public. Sharing and caring are values that have guided me during my thirty-year career as professional artist, culture policy expert, producer and manager of a women-led organisation and I truly believe that to really create a world in common, joining all forces across all cultures is necessary in theses critical times and in this spirit of openness which has been running ASSITEJ since its creation.

Profile of the Candidate
As a professionally trained artist, I wasn’t prepared to take leading roles (out of stage or in front of the camera). The 1994 genocide in Rwanda and the political instability in the sub-region confronted me with new realities. I had to adjust and learn how to actively participate with others in the reconstruction of a nation and peace building. From “simple”performer, to advocacy leader, from creator to arts manager, producer and fundraiser, I learnt how to support the arts sector by acquiring new skills through master classes, workshops, online courses in culture policy, project management and fundraising. I’ve chosen mentors (Joy Mboya, Mike Van Graan, Felwine Sarr, etc.) and became a mentor too. I joined and extended multiple networks within and outside Africa and created my own network of professionals sharing the same vision for the creative sector. 30 years later, I deeply value the arts of collaboration, have a strong expertise in resources mobilisation, project management and partnerships development with regional & international institutions such as European Union, Agence Française de développement, French and Goethe Institutes, Unesco, African Union, La Francophonie.

Seok-hong Kim – ASSITEJ Korea

I have been passionate about the performing arts for my entire adult life, both as an arts manager and an administrator. During this time, TYA has also been an important part of my career, as I have had a deep relationship with ASSITEJ Korea, serving as a board member for international exchanges for more than a decade. Before creating my own company recently, I worked for the Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS) for a long time. KAMS is a government agency which is the most powerful organisation in Korea for promoting international cultural exchange. KAMS has been organising PAMS, the Performing Arts Market in Seoul, for almost 20 years. I served as the Director of International Exchanges and the Secretary General for 2015-2016 at KAMS. Before joining KAMS, I was in charge of programming for several years at Guro Art Valley Theatre in Seoul, Korea. I was awarded for my programming of the venue by the Korean Culture and Arts Centers Association. Additionally, I worked as a producer at the KNU, the National Conservatoire School for Drama, where I focused on connecting students with professional artists. I studied theatre and arts administration at university.

Motivation of the Candidate
I do believe in the value endorsed by ASSITEJ International: that every child and young person has the right to enjoy arts and culture. I support all efforts aimed at strengthening and expanding it by ASSITEJ International, tackling it together with its members, partners, and supporters. That’s why I want to continue to be part of ASSITEJ International. I fully aware what my missions and roles would be in ASSITEJ. The first is as a professional I should put my abilities into actual ASSITEJ projects and so as to make the association more concrete. The second would be about Asia and the Asian region. I strongly believe that there is more that can be done to expand and deepen the relationships between Asian TYA communities and those globally, as well as among Asian TYA communities themselves. I think Asia has many potential resources for TYA. If re-elected, I will dedicate myself to fostering these connections. Moreover, ASSITEJ Korea is currently aiming to host the next ASSITEJ Congress in 2027. One of the primary motivations behind hosting the Congress would be to strengthen ties between Asia and the rest of the world. I am sure that I can contribute to the success of the Congress.

Barbara Małecka – ASSITEJ Poland

I am a theatrologist, artistic director, manager of international projects and an artist. I work at Animation Theater (one of the oldest puppet theaters in Poland, founded in 1945) as the artistic director of the international festival KONTEKSTY and project manager. I also served as deputy director from 2016 to 2018. I coordinated over 40 diverse projects – international and local – focused on children and families, including long-term projects within Creative Europe and UNICEF. I have been an active member of the Small size Network since 2013 and a board member from 2016 to 2019. I am a co-founder and board member (since 2010) of Art Fraction Foundation, an NGO that implements projects for young children, supports the development of theater for the youngest audiences and is focused on international cooperation. For 13 years I was the artistic director of the International Children’s Arts Festival “Art Seeks Toddler” (2009-2021), and now I organize the “Early Years Festival” (from 2022). As an artist, I am a stage designer creating sets and touring performances for the early years in Poland and abroad (Japan, Norway, Slovakia). More about my work: www.artfractionfoundation.com
Motivation of the Candidate
I have dedicated my whole professional career to theatre for children which is my profession and passion. I understand that working for the EC is a big responsibility. A responsibility to make our voice heard. In the most difficult moments of the last three years, whenever I thought that my work did not mean much in the face of the greatest hardships and tragedies, it always turned out that the power to unite people, to bring solace, hope and smile – is actually in art. I believe that only a society built on a foundation of kindness, cooperation and mutual concern has a future and is capable of changing the world. The most important thing for me is to care for the youngest: to create the best possible conditions for their development and a safe space that respects their subjectivity. That’s why I believe in the powerful nature of theater and its ability to transform reality. I believe that thanks to international cooperation of people sharing common goals, the number of children who can benefit from this power increases. This can only be achieved by expressing strong advocacy for our sector among policymakers.

Profile of the Candidate
Over the past 15 years, I have worked – in different roles – in organizing 25 editions of various festivals. I gained experience in fundraising, planning and organizing big events, working with artists and organizations from different sectors, accounting for projects and their evaluation. As deputy director of the theater, I worked with the local government, NGO’s, the Ministry of Culture and cultural institutions. Since 2009, I have implemented over 40 (mainly international) projects for children founded by various sources: local, national, European (Creative Europe) and UNICEF. I have the experience of 10 years of artistic practice in various theaters (also abroad) and of international touring – which makes it easier for me to work with new teams. I have a experience in the field of early years theater from my own artistic practice and good knowledge of this sector as I have been observing it closely since 2009. I have been sharing this experience through lectures and master classes for artists. My diverse professional experience allows me to recognize the needs of different professional groups and navigate among them. I believe that my experience can be useful to the EC team.

It has been a fruitful experience that made me learn a lot about the association, its members and its functioning.
Motivation of the Candidate
Since 2008, when I had the first contact with ASSITEJ International, I have participated in several meetings with artists, researchers, educators and producers who are dedicated to TYA and began to desire to contribute actively to the Association. At ASSITEJ Brazil, we think that politically it is important to have a strong representation of the Iberoamerican network at the EC, contributing with the global perspective of the Association and with our movement to consolidate existing national centers and to stimulate new countries to configure new ones. It is also important to bring our local experience with the ASSITEJ International Professional Networks to the Global Context. Being part of the EC in this term, as counselor, provided me with understanding the hard work that is done by all the members, and allowed me to understand how I can contribute with the Association. I have been very well received by the group and I think it is important to continue the complex work that is being done at the ASSITEJ structure. I hope that, due to my professional experience in research, publications and organization of scientific events, I can continue contributing at the Communication actions.

Profile of the Candidate
Communication – Due to my work at the University, I have participated in several editorial boards and events organizing commissions, in addition to the organization of some books. Within ITYARN, I worked on several scientific councils. So, as I did as Counselor at the EC during this term, I can continue contributing with the ASSITEJ communication strategy and deliverables – as the WDT; the magazine, and the newsletter. Research – As an artist and professor, I can bring the academic perspective, contributing with the aspects as dissemination of the research that have been done during this term and new ways of documentation and construction of the memory of the association; Bridges – As an active member of the Iberoamerican network, I can bring our perspective and specificities to the global context. As a member of the ITYARN board, I will be able to act as an interlocutor between the EC and ITYARN, bringing the academic perspective for the actions of the Association; Language – My mother language is Portuguese, but I can speak English, French, Spanish and Italian. So, I can contribute at many meetings and events with our big challenge about the diversity of languages.

Motivation of the Candidate
When I discovered ASSITEJ I found out the real value of the performing arts for children and youth. I realized its great potential (to do something) but also the long way we still have to go to ensure access to high-quality arts for children. ASSITEJ is a wonderful opportunity to work together —at a global level, but taking the most of the local identity of each of the countries that are part of ASSITEJ — to share experiences, knowledge and strategies to contribute to the development of the performing arts for young audiences locally and globally. We are in a moment of great possibilities, but also of big challenges. I would like to contribute to make our voice, the voice of all of us, to be heard in such a complex and heterogeneous world. From ASSITEJ Spain we have worked in recent years to develop a transformative project that allows all people, companies, theatres, festivals, playwrights, … to join us to work together for the common benefit. I would love to bring my experience as a project manager and cultural communication officer, as well as my enthusiasm for our goals, to contribute to the path towards the transforming horizon that ASSITEJ symbolizes.

Right now we are running a lot of different projects at national level in collaboration with public administrations and our membership is increasing every year. I believe I can contribute with all my experience to ASSITEJ’s mission.

Emilie Robert – ASSITEJ France

I studied marketing in a business school but never worked in business… My first job was a communication mission in the Ile de France National Orchestra (in Paris). There, I realized that performing arts were the sector where I wanted to engage my professional life in. A few years after, I moved to the south of France. First, I worked in a theater as public relation assistant. Then, I decided to put into practice some of the learnings from my studies as manager in an artistic company: I worked four years with an independent artist. In 2002, I became the financial manager of the Periscope Theatre in Nîmes, a small independent emerging theater. In 2007, I was chosen to be the new head of the theatre. Since 2013, I have been the general manager of the Théâtre Massalia in Marseille, a performing arts for young audiences organization. I was also copresident of Scènes d’enfance – ASSITEJ France during seven years, from 2017 to 2024. Since 2021, I have been a member of the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ.
Emilie is available for the position of Treasurer.
Motivation of the Candidate
Since 2021, I have been a member of the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ and I have been working on several topics. Among these, I have set a “Coffee sessions” program with my colleague Ernie Nolan for 3 years. I am one of the sustainability committee member as well. I have been learning and working a lot at the same time, since I have been on the EC. It is a very strong experience, that I would like to extend. These 3 years were intense as we shaped new activities, thanks to Europe Creative and our new digital work abilities. We have been more committed to access and inclusion, particularly in the advocacy work and the gatherings. We need to go further and I would like to go on.

Profile of the Candidate
I have cultural policy and project management knowledge and experience, writing and communication skills. I’m a hard worker. I like a lot working in team, with everyone in mind, and networking.

Yuck da Silva Torres Miranda – ASSITEJ Mozambique

Yuck Miranda (he/they) is a Mozambican actor and performer with work spanning film acting, theatre, music and vocal work, dance, choreographing, directing, and teaching. Uniting his versatility and experiences in documentary direction, performances centered in the body and its expression through movement, sound and pacing, and facilitation of complex dialogues, he creates works that focus on advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and children’s rights. He’s gathered many practical experiences throughout his participation in internationally renowned events, and through working with the biggest theatre and dance companies in South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Portugal, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, but never forgetting his origins and investing in the performance arts community in Mozambique. Yuck Miranda is committed to creating opportunities and elevating the theatre for young audiences in Mozambique. As Vice-President of ASSITEJ Mozambique, he has re-structured the association on a national level and ensured its renewed membership of ASSITEJ International. He also organizes the annual international theatre festival Othwela for young audiences in Maputo.
Motivation of the Candidate
My real motivation to be an EC member comes from my desire to see more national centres join ASSITEJ International. I’m talking specifically about centres that were part of it at one time and then fell apart and lost their contact network. But I’m also talking about those countries that have little information about this great platform. I see myself on the Executive Committee with the task of opening more national centres within my continent, but also outside of it. I see myself with the responsibility of establishing a Lusophone network connecting Europe, Africa, America and Asia, to create a more solid movement. I realise in my holistic view that the world is sick because children and young people are being killed in all sorts of ways all over the world. I see myself advocating for the rights of all young people in their different contexts, bringing deeper reflections and provocations so that we can create new narratives for future generations. I see ASSITEJ International as a portal that provides opportunities and strength, nurtured by specific methodologies in line with human rights policies. And the brilliant thing is that we use art for this, which is a place of freedom.

Profile of the Candidate
One of my greatest skills, which is very visible in my work, is my ability to network using my originality as a human being. I always had difficulties at first because of the language, but I always overcame them. Without a very clear language, I’ve connected with artists, institutions and politicians from all over the world and we’ve developed projects and partnerships. Another advantage of being an expert in networking is that I have access to the various funds of European institutions and those of other continents and have had the privilege of benefiting from them with great success. This has also given me an insight into how the fundraising and procedures of these funds work, as well as their specific language. I’ve also learnt in the process to look at small opportunities and to have a more visionary eye in order to make big projects happen in the long term. In doing so, I never forget to have a clinical eye in order to understand the problems and challenges that a particular group or institution is facing, in order to strategically plan how they can succeed.

Bebê de Soares – Young Dance Network

After a career in dance, Bebê de Soares started to work in 1994 as an actress, director, and producer. She co-founded T4G – Teatro 4Garoupas with the Austrian director Arno Kleinofen. Their collaboration was awarded and critically acclaimed in Brazil and Germany. T4G is currently expanding its profile as a company that produces dance as well as theater pieces. Intercultural and intercontinental work has been in the group’s DNA since its inception. In 2002 she created the AMAZONAS NETWORK – a platform creating projects that promote international exchange in the field of performing arts for young audiences, sharing her deep knowledge in this field, both from the perspective of the organizer / director of the festivals and from the perspective of the artist. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ International and since 2021 one of the Vice Presidents of the association. In February 2019, she moved back to Hürth, Germany, after eight years in Santiago, Chile. Since 2022 T4G is bringing productions to rural regions in Germany as part of the PERFORM EUROPE and SPARSE+ European projects.

Motivation of the Candidate
I am candidating for a 3rd period in the Executive Committee. I go on believing in the absolute necessity to connect PYA internationally and to further work on the EC would resonate with my commitment to look for real diversity in our international stages, bringing every perspective and every voice around the globe. I will go on advocating for the need of equity of opportunity for the global south through language and mobility specially. I have observed with great interest in the past years the rise of dance work for young audiences and the growing presence in the internacional platforms and ASSITEJ itself of professionals in this field. As someone who invests greatly in the international ecosystem, it was always clear to me that dance has a special place when we speak about internacional collaborations. To be part of the EC representing YDN includes representing all networks – I feel I can bring to the table my years of experience in the field of networking itself. I am deeply grateful to the YDN to let me express the important link I have towards such an amazing art form that it is Dance.

Profile of the Candidate
Cultural policy – I have worked in the past 20 years researching international cultural policies abroad to bring work to Latinamerica. I have worked as international advisor for several festivals globally in the past years and represented ASSITEJ in European context. Arts management – I offer a deep knowledge of international cultural exchange in TYA, both from the perspective of the organiser/director of festivals and from the perspective of artists. Due to my work as an agent I have knowledge of the South and North American markets besides having organized numerous tours and projects in Asia. Communication skills – I regularly present keynotes, participate in discussions and seminars, write articles about international exchange in TYA. My mother language is Portuguese and I speak fluently, read and write in English, German, French and Spanish. This is highly helpful for the understanding and comunication when doing international, intercultural work, also translating. Funding – I have researched and connected with professionals involved in institutional funding with a focus on international mobility. I have experience detecting opportunities and creating international projects.

Stavros Stavrou – ASSITEJ Cyprus

Born in 1988, Stavros Stavrou is a writer, cultural manager, producer and President of ASSITEJ Cyprus. He holds a BA degree in Greek Literature, as well as an MA degree in Arts Management and Cultural Policy, both from King’s College London. As a lyrics-writer, he has extensively worked in the Greek music industry. Since 2012, he has worked in the theatre industry as writer and producer, collaborating with the National Theatres of Greece and Cyprus, as well as many other companies. He has also worked in the field of TYA as a producer, with his shows touring internationally. His production “Antigone” (2023), was the first “green” show in Cyprus. From 2020 to 2023 he was a member of the theatre funding committee in Cyprus. As a project manager, he has worked on numerous cultural projects. He has also released four books. He is the President of the Association for People with Mental Disability and a member of the Cyprus Centre of the ITI. Apart from being the founder and President of ASSITEJ Cyprus, he is active in the Small Countries Network, while he recently became an IIAN Board member. In 2023 he was nominated as Man of the Year in Cyprus, in the Culture category.

Motivation of the Candidate
ASSITEJ Cyprus became a member of ASSITEJ in 2021, a few days before the World Congress in Japan. Looking back, I could have never imagined how ASSITEJ would change my life in the following years. Feeling grateful for everything offered to me, I feel that this is the time to give back to the Association. I come from a country which is divided and much of my work has focused on using culture to bring its ethnic communities together. My country is also a crossroads between three continents; a part of the world recently wounded by the horror of war. I believe that in this fragile world, theatre has the power to build bridges; to transform; to inspire. Holding the values of ASSITEJ highly, I will work hard to support the Association in its work to ensure that every child has access to culture; that every child can have its voice heard. I am also committed in working for the development of TYA and advocating for a more inclusive and sustainable sector. With international collaboration as our tool, sharing and learning from each other is central. We all know that theatre cannot change the world. It has, though, the power to make us re-imagine the world; and that is the first step…

Profile of the Candidate
Being both an artist and a cultural manager, has helped me look at the performing arts sector from different perspectives. I believe that my academic and practical background in arts management and cultural policy, as well as my experience in international collaboration and networking could be helpful for ASSITEJ. As the first President of ASSITEJ Cyprus, with my team I built the organization from scratch, developing it into a vibrant National Centre. In this process, financial constraints meant that we had to come up with innovative ideas and think outside the box. This journey, I believe, has given me the administrative skills and the experience required for such a role. Besides ASSITEJ, I have served as member of various boards of cultural organizations. During my career, I have also led projects involving communication strategy building, fundraising and proposal writing. I am also a team player and I believe that this is essential for a role like this. As a professional writer, my writing skills could also be an asset, while my experience in inclusive and “green” theatre can help ASSITEJ in its effort to become more inclusive and more sustainable in the years to come.
